Berber languages

Where? — Among tribes scattered across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt; there are also smaller populations in the northern regions of Mauritania, Mali and Niger.

Language Family — The Berber languages are a branch of the Afro-Asiatic languages. The other branches of this family are Chadic (the most famous Chadic language is Hausa), Cushitic (e.g. Oromo and Somali), Coptic, Omotic and finally the Semitic languages which Arabic and Hebrew belong to.

How many? — Roughly 11,000,000 speakers. Ethnic Berbers - 9,500,000 in Morocco, about 4,300,000 in Algeria and smaller numbers in neighbouring countries.

Did You Know ...that the term Berber comes from the Roman word barbara, which means barbarian?
